Erosion from rainstormErosion Control

Erosion is a process that occurs naturally and most times made worse by new construction projects.  Typically new construction projects begin by removing vegetation and topsoil, leaving the resulting site or ground vulnerable to erosion.

Weather in Western North Carolina can be very unpredictable, particularly in the mountains where the landscape alone presents a hindrance to erosion control.  To combat these weather patterns, Fletcher Grading provides erosion and dust control to their clients incorporating several different methodologies.Digging trench for silt fence

One method used to control erosion and dust is the silt fence, which is a temporary barrier made of woven wire and fabric filter cloth.  Silt fences can provide an economical and environmentally safe means of erosion control.  Without silt fences, sediment run-off can end up in streams and rivers, causing harm to fish and other living creatures in the water.

First, a trench is dug where the silt fence will be installed, as seen on the right.

The woven wire is overlapped and wired to each post as shown on the right.

Once the wire is in place, the fabric is installed and the silt fence is ready to provide invaluable erosion control.  This fabric is strong enough to resist long exposure to sunlight. Once the silt fence is erected, the trench is backfilled with dirt and packed down for a better hold.

Fletcher Grading Contractors frequently monitor these silt fences for damage and subsequently repairing those areas as needed.  Once more permanent erosion control measures have been implemented, the silt fence can then be removed.

Hydroseeding is an excellent method for erosion control.  Fletcher Grading Contractors utilize this method of erosion control, as seen on the left, combining it with straw mulching to further protect the ground.  Without hydroseeding, slopes can succumb to the effects of wind and water erosion rather quickly.

Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding, also known as hydraulic mulch seeding, is an alternative to the traditional process of sowing dry grass seed.  The mulch in the hydroseed mix helps retain moisture for the seeds to grow.  Hydroseed mix varies, but usually includes fertilizer, grass seed, hydromulch, and water in one solution.  Binding agents in the hydroseeding mix tends to "glue together" the surface, allowing a temporary water-retaining protection for the seed until a more permanent solution is established.

Typically, hydroseeding is used as a quick method to seed grass for commercial sites (highways), golf courses, and areas too large or inaccessible to the traditional methods of seeding grass.  Hydroseeding can also be used for starting a lawn, spraying wildflowers on highway medians, or used with horse pasture mixes.  Fletcher Grading Contractors limit their hydroseeding efforts to erosion control.  For more information on hydroseeding, contact info@fletchergrading.com.

Dust Control

As is true with any construction project, dust can pose a problem especially to those living in the area.  While there are many ways of controlling and combating dust, Fletcher Grading Contractors use a pressurized water truck, as shown on the right.  This truck is especially handy when no other water supply is available and can double as a street cleaner.
